Denim artist

Minyeol Cho’s work is a narrative built upon accumulated and intertwined fabric fragments. Each layer of collected fabric holds traces and stains imbued with the passage of time, and as these marks overlap, they create new memories and landscapes. The repetitive process of decolorizing, attaching, and cutting denim fabric brings together chance and intention, adding depth to the composition. Small fragments come together to form an organic flow, exploring how everyday objects can be connected and transformed, revealing new possibilities and deeper meaning within the ordinary.

At the core of Cho’s artistic practice is the pursuit of “natural imagery through the familiarity of artificial materials.” While the work employs synthetic materials, the layered surfaces formed through chance and process often resemble textures and patterns found in nature. This duality—where the artificial and natural intersect—encourages viewers to reconsider their initial impressions of the work. Some may perceive the surface as simply a patterned coating, but a deeper understanding of the process reveals an intricate interplay between control and spontaneity. When examined closely, the work evokes a sense of both estrangement and recognition, much like encountering something unfamiliar yet oddly familiar in the natural world.
